about your Germany-Semesterticket
Dear Students of the University of Duisburg-Essen,
Over the past few weeks, we have received numerous questions and feedback regarding the new Germany Semester Ticket. To make the transition as smooth as possible and to clear up any uncertainties, we would like to provide you with comprehensive information in this email. We will address various topics that are currently most relevant to you and explain step by step how to use your semester ticket and what to do in case of any problems.
Whether it’s questions about activating the ticket in the myUDE app, bringing along passengers or bicycles, handling fines, or obtaining a chip card if you don’t have a smartphone — we’ve tried to cover all important aspects. Additionally, we will clarify under which circumstances it is possible to be exempt from the semester ticket and what happens in the event of a price increase.
Please take the time to carefully read the following information to ensure you are well-informed and can use your ticket without any issues. If you have further questions, you’ll find contact details at the end of this email to reach out to us or the relevant departments directly (contact information is provided below).
We hope this information is helpful and wish you a great start to the semester!
Best regards,
Your AStA of the University of Duisburg-Essen
How do I get my Germany Semester Ticket?
The regulations for the Germany Semester Ticket stipulate that it is a personalized digital ticket. You can obtain the ticket through the myUDE app. The provision of a PDF document for printing is no longer offered by the transportation companies.
As a digital semester ticket via the myUDE app:
1. If you haven’t already done so, please download the latest version of the myUDE app to your smartphone (further details, including links to the app stores, can be found here: https://www.uni-due.de/myude).2. Log in to the myUDE app using your university ID and password (Attention: it only works with the university ID, not with your student email address!).
3. Your digital ticket will automatically be displayed under the „Wallet“ tab.
Before the semester begins, you must activate the switch (located above your wallet next to the hourglass) for future and old tickets to display the new ticket.
What if my semester ticket is not showing up?
• Log out of the myUDE app and log back in with your university ID.
• Re-authenticate yourself in the app settings.
• Reinstall the app if necessary.
• Check if you are enrolled as a student.
Ensure that you have a stable internet connection. After these steps, your ticket should be available under the „Wallet“ tab.
If this is not the case, please contact the ZIM immediately at myude@uni-due.de or visit the E-Point.
Do the benefits of the previous semester ticket, such as the ability to bring along people or bicycles, still apply to the Germany Semester Ticket?
The regulations for the Germany Semester Ticket do not include free bicycle or passenger transport. Likewise, transferring the ticket to third parties is not allowed!
Please note that the University of Duisburg-Essen’s enrollment office and AStA have no influence on these conditions. The federal and state governments have agreed on a more affordable Germany Ticket for students, which is now based on these terms.
Do I need to carry an ID with me in addition to the ticket?
Since the Germany Semester Ticket is a personalized ticket, you must be able to present an official photo ID (e.g., identity card, passport, etc.) at all times. Please note that in case of a ticket inspection, you may be subject to an increased fare if you cannot identify yourself.
The AStA of the University of Duisburg-Essen will not cover the fine!
What should I do if I receive a fine despite having a valid semester ticket?
If you encounter a ticket inspection while using public transportation and receive a fine despite having paid the semester fee and possessing the semester ticket, please contact the following email address immediately:
!! fahrausweiskontrolle@dvg-duisburg.de !!
Always use „Uni DuE“ in the subject line to ensure your concern is handled with priority. Please refrain from contacting the AStA (chairperson) or the university in such cases, as we cannot intervene.
What can I do if I don’t own a smartphone and cannot afford one?
If you are financially unable to purchase a mobile device and cannot afford one in the future, you can obtain a chip card due to this hardship at a customer center in Duisburg or Essen.
The chip card can only be issued after your application has been submitted to us (at the ServicePoint in Duisburg or Essen) and checked for accuracy, completeness, and legality. After this process, the AStA will issue you a certificate. The chip card can only be requested with this certificate!
I have a smartphone, but I don’t want to use it. What can I do?
According to the amendment for the Germany Semester Ticket, § 2 Scope of Services, paragraph (4), „The Germany Semester Ticket is a personal season ticket that is non-transferable. The Germany Semester Ticket is issued as a personalized digital ticket,“ we are unfortunately unable to provide the ticket in any other form.
The university administration issues the ticket as a barcode ticket through the myUDE app, enabling its use as a personalized digital ticket.
As the AStA of the University of Duisburg-Essen, it is important to us that everyone has access to the ticket. Therefore, we will strive to communicate with the transportation companies and other student councils.
Can I opt out of the semester ticket?
The Germany Semester Ticket is based on the solidarity model. This means that all students at UDE must pay for the ticket to ensure it remains affordable for everyone.
It is therefore not possible for individuals to opt out without valid reasons. If there is an exception in accordance with § 6 of the student body contribution regulations, you can apply to be exempted from the ticket.
For example, if you are unable to use or pay for the ticket due to a severe disability, a semester abroad, exmatriculation, or financial hardship, you can apply for a ticket refund or, in the case of financial hardship, file a hardship application.
What happens if the price of the Germany Semester Ticket increases?
If the price of the Germany Semester Ticket increases, we will renegotiate, as price changes cannot simply be passed on to students. These decisions currently lie with the federal and state governments.
Contract changes can also occur during the semester in urgent cases but not without prior consultation.
In the event of a price increase, we will keep you informed through our communication channels.
